Florida White
The Florida White is one of the rabbit breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA). These rabbits we’re noted for their white flyback fur along the breeds such as the New Zealand Rabbit and the White Polish rabbit.
This rabbit breed had originated in Florida during the 1960s. Just like other breeds of rabbits, these are also a product of selective cross breeding. They were first bred by Orville Miliken, a rabbit judge. But due to some unfortunate circumstances by 1962, the white ones from these breeds occurs very seldom due to its Dutch rabbit genes. Nevertheless, he in due course was able to consistently produce the trendy all-white rabbits through constant careful breeding. |
This all white breed was then further crossed to produce an all-white rabbit consisted of an albino Dutch, Ruby-eyed White Polish, and a small White New Zealand. This is based on his intent to produce a small all-white rabbit, though the earlier breeds were not quite what he was looking for. By 1967, the breed was then recognized by ARBA, but compared to the Florida White todays, the old ancestors were kind of different.
The current appearance of the Florida White rabbit nowadays are a product of the crossbreeding by Dale Adison. During the 1978, Fibber McGehee of Oklahoma planned to create his own breed and began breeding Polish to New Zealand Whites to produce a small Florida White breed, but unfortunately, he did nott achieve what he was looking for. Instead, he gave his entire stock to Dale Addison who’s determined to try his luck. Later in that year, Fibber decided to try again. |
He found a small white buck of unknown origin amongst a litter of Rex Rabbits which he purchased and introduced into the Florida White Breed line. This helped to produce the breed recognized today. The Florida White Senior Bucks and Does weigh in at 4 to 6 pounds with an ideal weight of 5 pounds. Junior Bucks and Does under 6 months have a minimum weight of 4 1/2 pounds and a maximum weight of 2 1/4 pounds. |
